Gucci announces new Shanghai Artwall for upcoming exhibition The Artist is Present

GUCCI has announced its newest Artwall mural in Shanghai, created for the upcoming exhibition The Artist is Present  at The Yuz Museum Shanghai. Curated by Maurizio Cattelan, the exhibition works to replicate the Marina Abramovic’s 2010 exhibition The Artist is Present, in an attempt to highlight the act of copying and appropriation in the art world. Exploring today’s contemporary culture and modern media, the exhibition’s title itself is a play on words, creating a backdrop of irony for the the entire collection.

The Artist is Present mural, Shanghai

The mural depicts the famous Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, creating a double meaning, as the sign has been appropriated and relocated to the streets of Shanghai. Ultimately, the mural itself is a copy of something else, setting the tone for the exhibition. As well as the Shanghai installation, the poster is also being showcased in Milan, New York, London and Hong Kong.
