Being hailed as an “alternative” makeup brand since its launch (with previous collections inspired by apocalypses, the paranormal and Paganism), we naturally raised a curious eyebrow when Illamasqua announced their latest collection would be uber-pink and girly. But obviously this wasn’t going to be any normal make-up collection.
The GLAMORE range includes three richly-pigmented Satin Finish Lipsticks, £16.50 each, in Soaked (a fiery jalapeño orange) Glissade (deep raspberry) and Luster (a wonderfully plasticky pink that even Barbie would put on the shades for). The textures are much more slick and glossy than the brand’s usually matte lip colours, but just as strongly pigmented, making them Illamasqua’s most wearable products to date.
There are also three glittery Shattered Star Nail shades (£15) in Trilliant, Marquise and Fire Rose (champagne, disco pink and burnt orange) which make us want to don a bubble perm and head out to Studio 54. Glamorous all this may be, but there’s nothing dainty or delicate about this collection which we can only expect from a brand known for it’s high-voltage, statement hues.
At the launch, Creative Director Alex Box explained that GLAMORE was inspired by vintage images of synchronised swimmers and tiller girls, which are referenced in the campaign. The models even sport updated “swimming hats” designed by up-and-coming milliner Daniel Ellyot. All in all, it seems Illamasqua are finally coming over from the dark side and giving their makeup more of a sunny, universal appeal – and we’re all in favour of it.
