JW Anderson debuts Men’s SS22 and Women’s RE22 Collection

DESPITE the disruption this prolonged pandemic has inflicted on the traditional show schedule, for many designers, it has actually proved to be a feast for the imagination. Namely for Jonathan Anderson’s Men’s Spring/Summer and Women’s Resort 2022 collections, which heralded JW Anderson’s and Juergen Teller’s third season collaborating together, and continued to manifest the path through the awkward avenue of transitioning from youth to adulthood.

For this season, Anderson choose to exhibit the collection through 33 printed photographs, slotted into pop-up frames, similar to the indestructible, cardboard kind that were prevalent among school portraits. The images were swathed in a particularly endearing custom wrapping paper, depicting a squirrel eating an acorn next to a bowl of strawberries.

And strawberries add a flavour of sweetness to the collections, with images of luscious green or scarlet-hued strawberries printed onto V-neck cable knits, long-length style hoodies and matching fleece tracksuits that recall the dubious styles of the 2000s.JW Anderson SS22                                                       JW Anderson Men’s SS22 and Women’s RE22 CollectionsJW Anderson SS22                                                         JW Anderson Men’s SS22 and Women’s RE22 Collections

The intersection of good and bad taste is also explored through the protagonist, anointed as a lad by Anderson, who is seized in the privacy of the bedroom as he investigates the outcome of various clothing concoctions.

The glorification of the bedroom is quite literally translated into a belted pillow-shaped dress, punctured by splashes of acid green, turquoise and magenta to weave in a sense of immaturity.

And of course, the lad is escorted by a party girl, who also possesses a parallel wardrobe of raw and whimsical attire, comprised of camisole dresses; damson-hued cropped blazers and a flouncy halter neck dress.

In essence, both collections are an ode to those coming-of-age in a digital era, specifically British youth and London’s melting pot of identities, who continue to hover in their bedrooms, toying with self-expression through style.
