LFW 22: Edeline Lee

FOR Spring/Summer 2022, Central Saint Martins graduate designer Edeline Lee opted for a multimedia presentation video rather than an orthodox runway show. Given the fact that the collection was conceived while the UK was amid a lockdown – this decision seems perfectly on theme.

The film presentation and Lee’s directorial debut was a collaborative effort with some of the designer’s close friends, including animator FRANKNITTY3000 and music producer Tom Burke.  The film featured abstract, DADA art movement & circus-inspired motifs.

Signature house design details such as the Ivory hand-covered Italian buckles and the bubble jacquard fabric are featured generously throughout the 32-look collection. A tank-top, midi length shift dress made of large strips of previously mentioned fabric is belted to create a sophisticated fringe dress.

It is a colourful line up featuring 53 different colours due to Lee’s conviction to only use leftover fabric to create the collection.  Various shades of blues, greens, reds and oranges saturate the feminine and bold designs.  Large, structured bows are a focal point in the collection. They act as ties to hold together a colour-blocked, a-line midi dress cut into three separate parts and decorate a tight-fitting, baby blue button-up blouse.

Lee’s starting point of inspiration is to design clothes for “women who travel a lot” which translates into garments cut out of wrinkle-free fabrics & easy to move in silhouettes – two notable accomplishments in her SS22 collection.
