IN THE mind of Jamie Wei Huang, the most beautiful aspects of design cannot be found in an end result, but are interwoven throughout the creative journey. Stressful, stimulating, exhilarating and exhausting all at once, the weaving path of success and failure was the foundational inspiration for Huang’s self-expressive SS20 show. Under the ethereal natural light of The Waldorf Hilton’s exhibition room, the art of process was celebrated in full spectacle.
In keeping with the exploration of completion, Jamie Wei Huang named the show Obsessive. OCD, after the common mental illness affecting an estimated 1.2 per cent of the adult population in the United Kingdom. A subtle hint towards this angle was the engaging soundtrack, which alternated between loud punk and somber tunes, highlighting the ups and downs in path towards a satisfying ending.
The clothes were also tailored towards the overarching theme, with a variety of artistic concepts negating a stereotypical polished finish. Juxtaposing fabrics and bold colour palettes were common features throughout the collection, along with asymmetrical seams and jagged edges. Punk was definitely a major influence, best shown through the eye-catching electrified hairstyles. For SS20, the contemporary label collaborated with footwear brand Skechers, sported by each model.
