FLORENCE Pugh, a performance by Sienna Spiro and a new Jaguar arriving with a racing driver at the wheel- last night’s Type 01 premiere in New York had all the glitz, glamour and hype. Held at STORIED in West Chelsea, the evening showed off Jaguar’s all-electric four-door grand tourer, with Pugh announced as the brand’s new ambassador.

And we see that the November 2024 rebrand now has a car to go with it. Designed, engineered and built in Britain, Type 01 follows Jaguar’s “Copy Nothing” message, an idea borrowed from founder Sir William Lyons.
Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover explains: “From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a car for a new era. Jaguars should be objects of desire and culturally relevant – that’s their natural habitat and where Jaguar is returning. Type 01 is the foundation of the brand, one that makes no compromise between design and engineering in our quest to reinvent Jaguar for the 21st century.”

The design is slick, with a long bonnet and low roofline recalling the E-Type and XJS, standard 23-inch wheels, broad shoulders and a glassless tailgate. Its headlights are Jaguar’s slimmest at 84mm high; rear lights stay hidden until lit, the spoiler deploys when needed and flush door handles can push through 4mm of sheet ice. Inside, a central spine with brass-effect aluminium detailing divides the cabin into four individual spaces, with wool-blend Kvadrat fabric surrounding leather or non-leather upholstery and heated and cooled seats front and rear.
Jaguar’s chief materiality designer Mary Crisp says, “Materials define how you feel and luxury is not always about more. Colours set the atmosphere, rich textures provide the depth and the brass-inspired finishers create the character. We have taken a tactile and architectural approach to the Type 01 interior.”

A 24-inch OLED screen handles driving information and entertainment, with smaller touchscreens for everyday controls and a camera-fed rear-view display replacing the usual mirror. Meridian helped develop the 38-speaker sound system, which lets front-seat occupants feel music through their seats. Three motors deliver up to 1,030PS and a quoted 0-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds; Jaguar expects up to 450 miles of WLTP range, with compatible 350kW charging adding up to 200 miles in 13 minutes, depending on conditions. As for the name, “Type” references earlier Jaguars, “0” denotes zero tailpipe emissions and “1” marks the first of the new generation.
