IN May the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York hosted their annual Met Gala. This year celebrated and honoured the designer, Rei Kawakubo, and her label, Comme de Garçons. The brand is now for its eccentric take on fashion in terms of print, design and silhouette cuts and the SS18 menswear collection was no different.
The models walked as well as danced on stage on a high-rise stage with bright, luminous, neon disco lights creating and ‘70s-‘80s atmosphere similar to the movie, Xanadu.
Rei collaborated with Nike creating customised Nike Air Max 180 trainers specifically for SS18. A Glass favourite was the white and bubble gum pink trainers. Models had slick, choppy black fringes and cheekbone length hair coated in glitter. Glitter was seen throughout the collection as well as mixed prints and patterns and typical Comme de Garçons garment contour.
A few looks appreciated at Glass were purple sequinned shorts matched with a mint green pleated shirt with dark green sequin panels running up either end. On top of the shirt was a white, traditional kimono style jacket with Leopard and fur Zebra print framing a waistcoat outline with a criss-cross corset embellishment.
The designs tap into Rei’s roots, as well as the things that she likes, while keeping it way ahead of its time. Pink and green oversized sequin blazers and pink and blue sequin shorts with sheer shirts were a hit and perfect for a night out.
A stand-out look was the toy babies mutated and placed strategically around a black polka-dotted jacket. The shoes had outlines making the trainers bigger than they already are.
More animal prints in a range of colours, sequin skirts and mixed material shirts also made it way on the runway.
