MFW SS22: Dsquared2

THE Dsquared2 film presentation opens with models cloaked in the SS22 collection recklessly graffiti-ing plastic sheets in an abandoned warehouse.  This scene perfectly set the mood for the “fairytale grunge” 30 look collection designed by Dean and Dan Caten.

Models strut around the wasteland – looking chicly dishevelled in their misbuttoned cardigans and ripped blouses – as if they were the only ones left standing after a 24-hour rave.  Perhaps, that explains the abandoned warehouse setting.

A mustard floral, matching suit jacket and itty bitty short set is layered with a crochet bralette and nude see-through slip dress. A pair of platform heels and a white, faux woven bag bookends the eclectic and effortlessly cool outfit.

Clever layering is a consistent theme throughout the collection – a forest green neoprene one piece is placed on top of a floral blouse and under a chunky cardigan. At the same time, patent leather trousers peak out from underneath shredded denim shorts.

The borderline ecclesiastical crowns made out of barbed wire perfectly summarizes the collection’s whole aesthetic.  Skinny scarves and vests make frequent appearances and even the occasional cargo short. It’s an ode to the 90s – the perfect cocktail of grime and glamour.

While the Y2K trend continues to permeate just about every corner of the fashion industry, Dsquared 2 wasn’t quite ready to enter into the new millennium.
