Opulence at La Maison Rémy Martin in Soho, London

Glass visits La Maison Rémy Martin’s elusive private members’ club for cognac and a decadent feast

There’s still time – just – to visit La Maison Rémy Martin on Greek Street. It’s a temporary private members’ club set across the multiple floors of a beautiful old town house right in the middle of Soho.

Opulence Revealed – a gastronomic experience at La Maison Remy Martin

This is the second year the club has opened, and for 2015 the focus is on hidden talents with demonstrations including salmon smoking and butchery, and interactive classes including Opulence Revealed – a gastronomic experience that we had the pleasure of attending.

It was a 30 minute class in which we, along with a small group, learnt about a very elegant and rich-tasting variety of Rémy Martin cognac called XO Excellence. The smell of it alone was appealing – notes of vanilla and saffron worked in harmony. There was, of course, a feast of decadent foods to sample alongside it – they were set up on the central table in a fashion akin to a historic, palatial feast with mountains of sugared figs aside rows of macarons, truffles, fudges and an enormous round of parmesan.

After a brief but detailed history of Rémy Martin and an explanation of the specific one we were tasting, we were allowed to sample freely on the contents of the table in an experience that felt like a true treat.

There are cocktails at the club too – mixed with Rémy Martin of course – and the Fleurissimo, a fizzy, Champagne-laced creation made in collaboration with one of The Connaught’s celebrated mixologists, was a firm favourite.
