Grease was the word at Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer collection, it was an all-singing, all-dancing fashion spectacle with energy and feel-good fun.
It was a take on Dancing With The Stars, the reality TV show with a backdrop of a judges’ table starring Spanish actress Rossy de Palma to pass judgment on the models as they pranced and danced, showing a collection influenced by musical performances. It was an opportunity for models to display facets of their personalities. A quiffed Coco Rocha took on John Travolta’s Danny Zuko and danced the routine to You’re The One That I Want on the catwalk, Karlie Kloss’s elongated frame was voguing along in a printed T-shirt, visible knickers and a skirt folded to origami precision at the hips and Hannelore Knuts managed a pretty fierce tango.
Models danced the show away in T-Birds to start, in boob tubes with neckerchiefs and waistcoats over peplum-hemmed dresses, all in black leather; a tulle ballerina skirt, perfect for twirling; hip-hoppy hoodies and blinged-up club dresses; lamé hammer pants; Winehouse-esque corsetry (with accompanying beehive); and pencil skirts along with Bretons and berets.
This collection felt more street and straightforward then usual, Gaultier toyed with the dance hall and rap; taking us on a sensational musical journey.
