Riccardo Tisci invites us outside in Burberry’s Pre Fall 2021 collection

WITH THE UK in the middle of a national lockdown, the four walls of our homes have become far too familiar and adventures outside consist of the weekly food shop to the local supermarket. However, Riccardo Tisci is looking beyond this new normal and into the past of British brand Burberry. Known since its founding by Thomas Burberry as a fashion house that prides itself on exceptional and durable outerwear, Tisci is taking the brand back to its roots.

“This is my uniform for the outdoors,” says Chief Creative Officer Tisci, “My love for all the contrasting elements of nature has been explored and reflected throughout this collection, combining the romance and beauty of nature with utility and practicality … This collection is about mirroring the natural environments within its dynamic prints, colours and textures.”

Inspired by the rich, traditional history of Burberry, the designer decided to give the old a new perspective. Utilising the house’s codes, camouflage prints and floral motifs with references to the animal kingdom are infused into strong tailoring, structured outwear and modern daily pieces. Trench coats with mesh bodysuits and floral print covered field jackets are contrasted with sweatpants.

The pre-fall 2021 collection sees looks transition from day-to-night, inside-to-outside effortlessly. For women, diamond quilting on jackets, wool capes and collarless leather coats are highlights of the outdoor attire, while the corset dress, wide-leg jumpsuit and the show-stopping dark blue sequinned gown breathe modern femininity into the clothes.

Tisci takes men into the wild with the camouflage print that comes to life not only on coats and jackets but also cargo trousers, sweaters and kilts. The collection caters to both of the Burberry men, the sporty, urban one, and the one that thrives in tailoring and traditional British attire. Wool silk tailored jackets and a grain de Poudre wool coat bring the nightlife into the collection, while the outdoor element is seen in the utility of the detachable pocket gilet and reworked bomber jacket.

This extensive pre-fall collection covers all ground, providing both men and women with everything, from simple daily pieces to evening-wear that is meant to be worn out. The widespread appeal is there, touching more upon the urban Burberry consumer than the one who owns a country estate, but nonetheless, Tisci’s has learnt he needs to appeal to both. He wants to take us on an adventure outside but while we are stuck indoors, I can continue to dream about a world I can wear a black mini dress with a faux fur coat!
