TAIPEI FASHION Week Spring/Summer 2023 demonstrated the personalities of functionality, sustainability, crossover, diversity and humanity.
Opening the week with “CrossLab: Dialogue Between Indigenous Art and Fashion” Runway Show, Taipei displayed a themed group show staging collaborations between Taiwanese designers alongside expert indigenous artisans, transforming these nationally cherished methods into new inspiration for fashion designers. The show emphasised the importance of preserving and passing along cultural traditions and techniques while building the community and fashion with a new perspective.
Taiwanese designers expressed the country’s sustainability goals and continued to create a progressive outlook on the future of fashion. Alongside the opening show “CrossLab: Dialogue between Indigenous Art and Fashion” and “New Breed”, 14 talented brands and designers participated in filling the week with fashion that demonstrated diversity, traditional craftsmanship and sustainability, showing the power of Taiwan’s local culture and art. #DAMUR, be homme, C JEAN, DOUCHANGLEE, GIOIA PAN, INF, JENN LEE, Liyu Tsai, oqLiq, Seivson, Story Wear, UUIN, WANGLILING and Yentity, displayed the ability to create fashion and art to display the rich culture and creativity of Taiwan.
As Taipei Fashion Week continues to exert its influence within the global fashion community, the Ministry of Culture has dedicated to assisting experienced and emerging domestic designers and brands to promote cross-disciplinary innovation, and to demonstrate the soft power of Taiwan’s unique heritage, fashion and art.
Illustrating the importance of Taiwan’s history and the importance of cultural sustainability, UUIN displayed a spectacular show on the Taipei Performing Art Center stage, where they were able to showcase the rich culture of Taiwan alongside their runway looks. UUIN collaborated with U-Theatre Taiwan to create a theatrical performance surrounding UUIN’s ‘A Mo-Den Girl” retro modern fashion, combining fashion and art and bringing Taiwan’s culture to light.
With environmental sustainability being a dominating factor to Taiwan fashion, brands explore their relationship with production, materials and social responsibilities while progressing their creativity. As a brand who shows care to both the natural environment and the people living in it, Story Wear has been promoting the concept of sustainability in Taiwan since the beginning of its establishment. The brand brings to attention the survival of the next generation by using recycled and reproduced materials to produce a whole collection, whilst focusing also on liberty and equality in Taiwan.
Taipei Fashion Week has become an important platform for Taiwan’s fashion industry, integrating talents from all sides, striving to develop Taiwan’s fashion characteristics, and showcasing their uniqueness. Taipei will continue to resonate with the global audience as they carve its place within the global fashion community and make a remarkable and vivid memory for the next generation.
