THE classic two-tone style shoe from Chanel is back for the brand’s AW17/18 collection. First created by Gabriella Chanel herself back in 1957 in the style of a sling-back heel, the shoe was known as “the height of elegance”.
Gabriella Chanel and the genesis of the two-tone boot
Throughout Chanel’s history the two-tone motif has appeared in many of the brand’s collections. Creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, has paid homage to the design in a majority of his shows reviving them in the SS84 RTW runway show. The design was also seen on boots in the AW91/92 and ‘96/97 collections. They became rain suitable for AW94/95 and were extended in length for the AW05/06 show as thigh boots. SS06 saw the mid-calf leather boot which was also appeared in the house’s Haute Couture show and a faux fur adaptation of the two-tone style was created for AW10/11. A skinny, sock copy of the boot which was shown on the SS14 catwalk was the last time the Chanel two-tone boot was seen.

Just like Chanel N°5 and the quilted shoulder bag, the two-tone shoe is a staple in the Chanel wardrobe. And this AW17/18 version of the boots takes on a classic, Victorian style while remaining modern. The mid-calf boot looks rather comfortable, the satin and suede boot comes in a dark colour palette ranging from navy, beige, red, grey, blue, plum, dark teal and a raspberry pink. All paired with a solid black heel, sole and toe cap. The signature of Gabriella Chanel and the instantly recognisable logo embellishment adorned the top of the boot – simple yet effective.
