IN A quest for simplicity with a modern luxury twist, Tod’s 2023 Pre-Spring collection features urban uniforms that use elegance and femininity to create reimagined versions of a classic male wardrobe.
Creative Director Walter Chiapponi has designed a range of traditional garments that include an oversized trench coat, a sublimely tailored jacket and trouser suit, a men’s shirt that acts as a dress, a refined pea coat, a petite bomber jacket and a safari jacket featuring utility pockets and detailing.
With an individualistic colour palette and material list, the garments are presented in the likes of purple suede, white poplin-style leather, supple red plongé nappa, distressed denim patchworks, linen and wicker hemp fabrics, and great ethnic stripes.
With a 90s feel to the series, the minimalistic, yet androgynous silhouettes, match perfectly with the rich feminine impression of texture, and the presence of three-dimensional effects. All of which result in a parade of artisanal aesthetics.
From this, the knitwear aspects of the collection come to light, as Chiapponi effortlessly combines essential lines with the playful effects of handmade textures. This tactile approach can be seen best in a duo of long-sleeved knitted sweatshirts that both feature bold, thick cuffs and avant-garde inspired hip detailing.
The accessories that run with the series tie in seamlessly with their reflection of exceptional Italian craftmanship, balanced with the sharp, clean lines of modern contemporary design. Some of which feature logo embellished belts and on trend bulky, tinted sunglasses.
The bags in the collection contain a mix of sizes, making the series fit for any occasion. From decorative, geometric shapes that are displayed over the larger items, as seen in the T Timeless Bag with contrast stitching, to the smooth simplicity of the smaller leather goods, the blend of ethnic-styled fabric enriches every look with a hint of uniqueness. The neutral and warmer tones of these designs make for a staple in any wardrobe too.
Finally, the shoes this season play on the more traditional designs and the desires for handmade touches, as we see in the classic Tod’s loafers with a straw wedge and metal Kate embellishment. The leather coverings take the crafty effects of a summer espadrille into the colder weather, making them not only durable but a direct mirroring of the craved Italian lifestyle.
We also get to see the sabot clogs that are woven in leather with further promote a cohesive, exclusive collection, accentuated by “personality and international eccentricity.”
