Derek Lam approached the 1970s soberly, not unlike last seasons pastel offerings. Loose, luxurious tailoring and some really great outerwear were the highlights of yesterday’s New York presentation – while the cuts remained clean, outsized buttons and sturdy cuffs and lapels added interest to softly belted wool trench coats. Exaggerated white topstitching on V-neck jumpers and square pockets, zipped and ribbed collars and red and white stripes running along the sides or front pleats of baggy navy trousers added an element of elevated sportiness.
A lightly boned strapless ecru dress lifted the overall impression, complimenting these autumnal layered separates. Flashes of fuchsia, teal, and the occasional monochrome patterned calf-hair, glossy patent leather or supple suede punctuated the dominant muted rust, stone, navy and browns, creating a wearable collection, erring somewhat on the side of safe.
