Glass relishes in Hebridean hospitality at The Machrie

REMOTENESS. It conjures a sense of isolation and fear in some, or a huge sense of peace and contentment in others. I fall into the latter tribe. But do not be fooled – the Isle of Islay’s The Machrie may be remote in its outpost on the rugged Inner Hebrides isle, but it lacks nothing in the way of unparalleled luxury and comfort.

On arrival amid an evening of near gale-force winds, we were greeted with a crackling fire and a true taste of Hebridean hospitality. Each of The Machrie’s 47 rooms, suites and lodges are the epitome of modern, contemporary refinement and make the perfect base from which to explore the island’s wealth of wild beauty, world class whisky distilleries (nine on this tiny isle) and, in The Machrie’s case, world class golf links, whose views over soft dunes and pristine sands to the Atlantic are both bracing and breathtaking.

Back in the warmth of the hotel, you will be treated to a comprehensive plethora of original artwork from some of Scotland’s finest and most well-known artists, including John Bellany, John Lowrie Morrison and Peter Howson, and, if you are lucky, the knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff will take you on a tour of the displays.

These aside, there is also a fantastic collection of framed Hermès silk scarves, each one with a golfing theme, which lends a certain fashion element to proceedings.

The dining experience at The Machrie is undoubtedly a true highlight of a stay here and its commitment to locally-sourced and Scottish-inspired dishes is evident. As a seafood lover, I do not hesitate to say that the Loch Gruinart oysters are probably the best I’ve ever tasted (and I’ve had my fair share), while the grilled Port Askaig lobster is a luxurious treat after a day of blustery walks. All that remains is to take a seat by the roaring fire with one of the island’s finest peaty drams.
