Glass visits Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, USA

THE FORMER Century Plaza hotel has finally re-opened as the Fairmont Century Plaza after an eye-watering $2.5 billion redevelopment. A 23-foot mesh sculpture by Juane Plensa stands by the hotel entrance as a message to guests that nothing has been done in half measure here. Drawing on its rich history as a showbiz hotel and the epicentre of movie life, the Fairmont is strategically located in Century City, once part of the 20th Century Fox Studios’ backlot.

I already feel like a celebrity with each member of staff addressing me by name before I even enter my room, filled with champagne and snacks. I’m even offered the complimentary service of one of the hotel’s immaculately attired chauffeurs to drive me around the neighbourhood at any given time including a ride to and from the local shopping areas in the hotel’s Mercedes S Class. I decline the offer – it’s a mere block away.

This property has been transformed by international design firm Yabu Pushelbert, delivering a contemporary update to its1960’s vibe. It comprises 400 rooms and suites across various categories, each decorated in neutral tones and state-of-the-art lighting and technology, while the marble and mirrored bathrooms are brimming with LeLabo amenities.

At the  hotel’s notable Parisien-inspired restaurant Lumiere, furnishings and fittings have been sourced from France adding to its authentic atmosphere. Steered by hospitality giant Mr Paul Quinn, food is bistro-style serving top notch cuisine that really hits the spot.

Fairmont Century Plaza rooftop pool

The charcoal-coloured 14,000 sq ft subterranian spa with its secret entrance for award-season preperations is probably the largest hotel spa in the city. And the rooftop pool offers stunning views of Los Angeles and across to Santa Monica, which are particularly impressive at night when the lights twinkle in the moonshine. It’s so easy to understand why this much-loved Californian destination is known as Tinseltown.
