London Collections Men SS16: Alexander McQueen

When it comes to McQueen’s menswear, it is always a good option to establish a strong narrative. And for SS16 that’s just what Sarah Burton has done. Pushing the boat out well and truly, the team went nautical and while limiting themselves to an equally sea-faring colour palette, didn’t hold back on using chic monochromes to their advantage.

Granted, some windswept jean and a kitschy sailor tattoo print went a step beyond the stripped down colour palette but as for the bulk of this collection, it was all played out very stylishly. Burton gave it a London-convincing London edge, not being afraid to add frills to sweaters and hectic bouts of asymmetrics and even more chaotic prints.

Overtly masculine trenches, oversized and decorated with large ‘porthole’ embellishments where, although slightly too exaggerated, a statement addition to the collection and kept the strength of it all moving forward.

Elsewhere the scattering of mediocre cut suits with experimental combinations of cloth and embellishments had enough chutzpah to remind us that this is a McQueen menswear collection, but just one that has certainly found its place in the LCM production line.
