PFW AW21: Loewe

THROUGHOUT the pandemic, Jonathan Anderson has proposed new, out-of-the-box ways to showcase lockdown collections at Loewe.

Earlier this year, it was the Show-in-a-Book – a 200-page coffee-table tome celebrating the work of artist and writer Joe Brainard that showcased the luxury brand’s charming AW21 men’s collection. This season, the Northern Irish designer has given us A-Show-in-the-News; a Loewe newspaper dispatched as a supplement in top broadsheets – including Le Figaro, the Times, the Asahi Shimbun.

The collection itself was an explosion of colour and joy, taking both shape and saturation up to 11.

Contrast defined the line-up, as sinuous lines clashed with straight ones in abstract silhouettes. Long tailored jackets came paired with cropped trousers; giant tassels hung along the hem of form-fitting suede suits; quilted coats were finished with neckerchief hems, while skirts, designed asymmetrically, came protruding on one side.

First launched in 1975, the House’s Amazona bag added a timeless touch to the offering in Nappa calfskin and anagram jacquard variations. Other accessories included knotted sterling-silver bracelets and necklaces, psychedelic lug-soled boots and the iconic Puzzle bag in multicoloured stripes.

A whirlwind of rich colour, texture and pure, unapologetic escapism, Anderson continued to redefine the boundaries of both Loewe and the fashion week model for AW21, proving, once again, that he is undoubtedly the industry’s most exciting storyteller.
