MMFW18: Prada

THE Prada fall 2018 show for Milan menswear was all about keeping modern-day elegance but with an industrial, utilitarian take. For the first time, Prada recruited the assistance of four creatives from the design industries – Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Herzog & de Meuron and Rem Koolhaas, to produce one-off items for the show.

The collection featured a mix of past and future as Miuccia Prada returned to the beloved all-black nylon of the nineties but with a more contemporary feel. Black dominated padded jackets and hoodies, loose fitting trousers and Chelsea boots. Alongside the nylon, Prada fans were reacquainted with past prints including the quirky banana prints from the spring 2011 collection and the lipsticks from 2000. There was lots of oversizing, padding and boxy silhouettes.

To epitomise the industrial feel, an all-new venue was chosen. The show took place at the Prada warehouse behind the Fondazione Prada in Milan. Male and female models marched across metal flooring, past boxes and cages marked with ambiguous Prada symbols.
