MADDOX Gallery is thrilled to unveil Partners in Time, a striking collection of faceless portraits by Spanish painter Coco Dávez. Launching on 9th March at Maddox Westbourne Grove, the exhibit showcases pairs of real-life or fictional iconic couples, highlighting their unique connections in Dávez’s signature Pop Art style.
Born in Madrid in 1989, Dávez began painting at the age of 21 and quickly gained recognition through social media. Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso, she developed her distinct faceless style, which she now applies to duos for the first time in Partners in Time.
The exhibition features Freddie Mercury alongside David Bowie, Andy Warhol with Jean-Michel Basquiat, and other legendary pairs such as JFK and Jackie Kennedy, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, and cinema’s beloved Sandy and Danny from Grease.
Maeve Doyle, Artistic Director of Maddox Gallery, comments on the exhibit’s exploration of various relationship dynamics: “Coco’s Partners in Time flaunts the division between real and imaginary couples… This exhibition invites the viewer to play a game of guess who, questioning the role of traditional relationships and exploring the importance of certain people in our lives – who stimulates us and who completes us.”
In this mesmerizing collection, Dávez skillfully highlights the unique features that define her celebrity subjects, such as hairstyles, clothing, and accessories. The omission of faces in her work invites interpretation, as some see it as celebratory, while others view it as a commentary on society’s fixation with celebrity.
Among the celebrated duos, Picasso appears alongside his legendary close friend Coco Chanel, showcasing a stimulating dialogue between the worlds of fashion and painting. Dávez’s personal connection to these iconic figures shines through her choice of colors, revealing a sense of the subjects’ character and the affinity between the two members.
Partners in Time at Maddox Gallery is a testament to Coco Dávez’s incredible artistic journey and a celebration of the connections that shape us. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the vibrant and thought-provoking work of this talented, self-taught artist.
