IN A celebration of Brazilian culture, music and nature, Marques’ Almeida spring-summer 2024 collection focuses on raw expression. Harkening back to the 70s, the collection looks to the Brazilian music scene for inspiration. Acting as a catalyst for change and liberation, music and art uplifted the voices of the LGBTQ+ community and women fighting for more freedom.
In particular, female artists and musicians such as Gal Costa, Maria Bethania and Rita Lee provided pivotal inspiration for the latest seasonal offering. From glamorous show looks to everyday casual wear, Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida have covered it all.
Connecting Brazil’s culture to their own, the designer duo looked to the sea for further developmental ideas. “When I die, I’ll come back to look for the moments I lived by the sea,” reads the collection notes. Citing a poem by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen, the SS24 themes become even more apparent.
Through expertly combining various fabrications, Marques’ Almeida has created a series of textural masterpieces. Cotton, denim and chiffon intertwine for a delicate interplay of colour and movement. In particular, drill and denim have been hand-dyed for an extra organic flair. Meanwhile, satin appears in vibrant hues of turquoise, orange, pink and seaweed green to echo the kaleidoscopic colour palette of the underwater world.
Cotton has also been adapted and reinterpreted for the new season. Now worked with flowing frills and layers, the pieces have been cleverly deconstructed to allude to Baiana costumes – a Brazilian traditional dress.
The duo have elevated wardrobe classics through careful styling choices and accessory pieces. Frill shirt dresses envelop and cascade over the body, whereas hand-dyed splattered boyfriend jeans accentuate the laid-back luxury look. Satin cape-like top gowns add further contrast and juxtaposition, meanwhile, transparent and opaque fabrics unite to create an elegant, hypnotic effect.
Combining historical motifs, ocean-themed silhouettes and unique design codes, the Marques’ Almedia SS24 collection liberates, excites and empowers.
