GIORGIO Armani engineered complete elegance for his SS17 collection presented in Milan. Ticking all the boxes neatly within the tick box yet again, summertime sheerness was omnipresent from start to finish in a series of graceful looks. A smart ensemble of the formulaic jacket, top, short / skirt and dress essentials allowed Armani to excel in his appreciation for beautiful fabric and the possibilities of print and embellishments brushed onto the skin.
The prevailing patterns this season were all flora-esque in watercolour streaks of palid blues and fawny greys. Like a trickle of water, or in the case of certain looks – a swollen teardrop – garments didn’t necessarily go about accentuating any kind of clearly definable figure, instead creating cascading silhouette. As attractive as these all were, especially with a Giorgio Armani label sewn within, they aren’t anything that isn’t being done by far less superior designers in far less spectacular surroundings.
This leads one to the belief that Armani should ensure quality control is brought to the contemporary aesthetic he is putting out there to give momentum to his collections season to season.
When there are still more hits than misses however, Armani will still come out on top. SS17 will appeal widely but not galvanise pockets of new audiences that a brand like Giorgio Armani should be thinking a bit more about. What with each design house Armani shows alongside giving more control to creative directors making divisive brand decisions, they should make sure their attractively designed clothing doesn’t hesitate to demand the spotlight it deserves, at any means.
