RONG Zhai, a unique Western-style garden villa in Shanghai, has been renovated and revived by Prada, Milan-based global fashion brand, and an architect specialising in renovation, Roberto Baciocchi. Rong Zhai wasowned originally by the distinguished Yung family and local, hand-selected Chinese scholars and artisans were also involved and included in Prada’s project.

The renovation was inspired by Miuccia Prada’s fascination for Chinese aesthetic heritage and commitment to the city of Shanghai. This renovation is simply the latest in a long line of preservation projects undertaken by Prada worldwide.

The restoration aimed to repair the damage to and reinstate the original interiors and exteriors of this early twentieth-century building, as well as making it more structurally sound. Where possible traditional Chinese methods and materials were used in the renovation process.

The opening of the Prada Rong Zhai was celebrated by the fashion brand hosting exclusive events at the villa. Last week, the Prada Resort 2018 fashion show was held. It was followed by a private dinner hosted by Miuccia Prada and her husband, and CEO of the Prada Group, Patrizio Bertelli.

A press conference was held by Patrizio Bertelli representing Prada, John Yung, the great-grandson of Yung Tsoong-King, the man who bought the original villa, the architect of the project, Robert Baciocchi and Michael Rock, founder of 2×4, a creative agency with offices in China, the US and Europe.

After the press conference, a cocktail party was hosted by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, with a special performance by Ansel Elgort, face of Prada L’Homme Fragrance.

Currently on display in Prada Rong Zhai is an exhibition that showcases the restoration processes undertaken during the renovation of Rong Zhai, as well as Prada’s past architectural explorations.
