The Getty Museum LA announces fashion photography exhibition

THE Getty Museum in Los Angeles has announced an upcoming summer exhibition showcasing 100 years of fashion photography. Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011 features over 160 photographs from the museum’s photography archive, as well as loaned pieces. Alongside the photographs, will be costumes, illustrations, magazine covers, videos and advertisements.

Visitors will see the work of renowned fashion photographers such as Richard Avedon, Nick Knight, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn and Tim Walker. Pieces by lesser-known, but influential artists including Gleb Derujinsky, Corinne Day, Toni Frissell, and Kourken Pakchanian will also be on display.

Curator of the exhibition, Paul Martineau said, “In 2010, we began working to strengthen the Museum’s collection of fashion photographs in the hopes of creating a foundation on which we could build a groundbreaking exhibition.” He added, “I continue to be intrigued by the ability of some fashion photographs to transcend their original commercial function in order to be considered true works of fine art.”

Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011 is open from June 26 until October 21 2018 at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
