PFWM SS20: Celine

FOR CELINE SS20, designer Hedi Slimane set the stage for his collection with a decidedly dramatic flair – think seventies, think New York, think glamour. The minamalist interior of the showspace, Dôme les invalides, was transformed into a Hollywood set as the space went black and revealed a velvet red curtain box. As the curtain raised, the first look of the collection was unveiled inside a box of flashing lights.

Slim-cut blazers had distinctly vintage influences, showcased by their squared shoulders, bright red flower lapels and patterned ties. Polka dot ties were paired with a glittery three-piece suits and flared jeans. Chunky bomber jackets with bold colours and prints, from snakeskin to brocade patterns, sparkled in the limelight.

Hinted days before the show on the brand’s instagram, was this seasons’s collaboration with multimedia artist, David Kramer. A child of the seventies, Kramer is a New York-based artist who re-crafts vintage adverteisments and creates a variety of paintings, illustrations and drawings that highlight the sentiment of the times.

Kramer’s distinctive ironic tone is showcased by his one-liners, of which are visible thoroughout many of the collection’s pieces. Statements like yesterday was better, downhill from here and … I am still waiting for my Hollywood ending, further enhance the collection’s nolstalgic remembrance for an American glamour of a time gone past.
