NYFW AW22: Helmut Lang

“IT’S HUMAN nature to gravitate to the familiar perhaps even more readily than to the new. But nothing is ever exactly the same twice, is it? It’s a cliche, but time changes everything”, Helmut Lang writes of the inspiration behind their new AW 2022 ready-to-wear collection. Showing for the AW22 collections at New York Fashion Week, the brand did what it does best – sophisticated grunge.

Helmut Lang’s AW22 garments are effortlessly glamorous, like windswept hair or perfectly smudged eyeliner. There is a cacophony of luxurious outwear, including a classic and slim cut motorcycle jacket and a rust-coloured shearling statement coat.

Military motifs and bomber jackets are present in the collection – two fashion trends one could argue Helmut Lang himself was initially responsible for back in the day.

Helmut Lang’s approach to sex appeal has far more to do with what is hidden and hinted at rather than what is on display.

Long sleeve mesh and lace tops are layered with structured tank tops embellished with buttons or cutouts. Figure-hugging jersey dresses, a brand staple, juxtapose a free-flowing silk button up and skirt set.

Forgoing the Y2K hysteria, Helmut Lang stays current and classic. Forget the frills and maximalism; according to Helmut Lang, minimalism never goes out of style.
