Directed by Yutaka Inagawa, artist duo Mouhitori (Tamaki Ono and Kiyohito Mikami) and Hitomi Kanemoto (STUDIO NIJI), the ambitious project features 5,000 artworks, from international artists including Michael Lee, Anwar Suhaimi, Taro Furukata and Andrew Stahl. Following its 2017 Singapore show, Drop Beyond Boundaries, this show is the fourth exhibition by the Only Connect collective.

The Only Connect collective draws the inspiration for its eponymous exhibition from a line from E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel, Howard’s End. The curators’ interpretation rests on the belief that there is real value to be found in connecting with people with entirely different backgrounds and beliefs to our own, while nonetheless acknowledging that our unavoidably subjective experience means that we will never be able to truly understand  the other person.

The exhibition explores this by bringing together a variety of different artworks, each of which stands alone and independent in the floor grid which maps out the exhibition, while nonetheless working together to contribute to the exhibition’s overall impression.

In this way the curators’ aim has been to “construct an interdisciplinary platform for contemporary experiments and idea sharing,” in the belief that, as modern lives have become more and more complex, this is the way that art can most constructively have something significant to offer
