The Marchesa brand has become synonymous with red-carpet glamour, which has made its return to London Fashion Week arguably the most anticipated show of the season. Not surprisingly, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig did not disappointed, bringing out all the stops with a rhapsodic bohemian-style collection full of eclectic influences and moments of breathtaking beauty.
Model Georgia May Jagger opened the show in a billowy white dress with layers of diaphanous floral embroidery that were light and beautiful rather than heavy due to the intelligent choice of fabrics. Romantic dresses echoing of the 1970s with billowy sleeves and peasant skirts filled the collection but were made modern with sheer paneling, layered patterns, and close tailoring. While Marchesa’s gowns are generally always the most beautiful moments in the collection, this season eye-catching peacock print skirts almost stole the show, particularly when paired with a fitted shirt or vest.
Yet, of course, the gowns won the day in the end, showing the softer, more dreamy side of Marchesa in a succession of floaty creations of burgundy and white silk, golden lace, and painted pastels all strewn with tiny blooms. These dresses were fairytale romantic but not excessive, even in an abundance of floral, largely due to an exquisite attention to detail and beautiful layering.
