Eclectic mishmash would be the best way to describe the offering for SS16 by designer duo Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman. And one that worked together beautifully. The main inspiration – and also the brand’s official collaborator – were Transformers, the hugely popular cars-turning-into-robots toys created in the 1980s, as the models wore spaghetti-strap dresses showing off a lot of flesh made of fabric decorated with small printed robot patterns in pop and neon colours or a sweatshirt and skirt with pictures from the Transformers comics.
As the frowers were folding their own little Transformers covered with print of roses on the sides appearing throughout the collection, the room got quiet only to be filled with futuristic techno beats that made the place vibrate. Then Fyodor Golan showed us what the future holds, as the futuristic yet modern yet retro-looking ensembles came out.
Bringing the rave culture as well as disco to mind, both already referenced in the music, the models wore metallic eyeshadow and long exaggerated earrings to finish the overall look. But also sci-fi films must have been on the designers’ mood board, with separates in metallic leather and transparent PVC covered with single prints of roses adding a soft romantic touch. The soft element made its way into the collection also in the form of big frills and chiffon underlayers.
After a while, Oriental elements started appearing in the music mix and subsequently in the clothes. The entire show, models were balancing on very high Geisha-like platform sandals in simple white or with streaks of neon yellow and straps in rose or daisy print. But later structural kimono-inspired dresses and pieces covered in little Geisha knots emerged, including a dramatic long black dress with the knots used as embellishment all over it and in place of sleeves all the way down the model’s arms. It was really a little bit of everything.
