Always grounded in Gotham, Donna Karan’s DKNY SS15 Ready to Wear collection stomped down the runway and into the streets. Some might say the bold prints might not translate to the real New Yorker, but their blatantly graphic color would blend right into a teeming downtown sidewalk. Footwear was infinitely practical, if funky, destined to show up in closets all over the city. Big coats (we could almost write that as a proper noun) shrouded against the blustery spirals coming down from the skyscrapers, covering more delicate pastels a woman would want to wear to her uptown office.
The interest on this runway came from the details. Celebrating New York City’s diversity, hair recalled ethnic neighborhood roots, plastered flat and sculpted into swirls like forehead tattoos, or long and braided. Striped tops and dresses in olive, brown, and almond would take any girl who grew up in 1970s America back to her childhood garb. Armour-like, but delicate not quite to the point of filigree, a shift dress gleamed. Models had their toughest tough girl faces, even in the few flirty, feminine pieces Karan sprinkled in. There’s no messing with the DKNY girl.
