Jean Paul Gaultier’s AW14 catwalk show during Paris Fashion Week took as its theme the grand adventure of fashion, which is what the industry has grown to expect from the designer’s spectacular showcases.
This season’s collection had a space age theme. Accordingly, guests attending the runway show were welcomed aboard an intergalactic rocket complete with staff dressed in white spacesuits navigating the traffic and hospitality, including cosmic blue cocktails.
The runway show featuring the garments within the collections were presented to guests as models being frisked by security before they boarded the spacecraft. Security would showcase a zipper, spin a model to display a fabric or trim before trotting down the catwalk.
Pieces from the collections were all space-inspired with a heavy emphasis on metallic colours, zipper detailing and textiles such as neoprene and leather. Sub-themes running through the collection included an ode to British style with references to the Royal Family. Models ranged in age from young children to mature ladies and gents in retirement age.
At the end of the show, Jean Paul Gaultier took a stroll throughout the spaceship in a full astronaut suit, thanking guests for flying aboard spacecraft à la Gaultier.
