MFWM AW19: Versace

WHILE the Versace MFWM Fall collection was the first show since the house was acquired by Michael Kors Holdings Limited, the brand has proven it is still quintessentially Versace. In fact, the show made sure to pay ode to its vintage collections, giving the collection an especially nostalgic  ‘90s feel, with its particular emphasis on monochrome stripes, leopard print and an abundance of sew on badges.

Not stopping there, the luxury Italian brand put out a sequence of neon, satin and the notorious ‘90s puffer jacket, not to mention the leopard-print coloured hair which stole the show. The variety of styling was also extremely expansive, transitioning from an assortment of in your face colour to sleek black and gold coordinated looks. It seems Donatella wanted to do it all with the newest collection, and with a troop of renowned models by her side, including that of Bella Hadid, Adut Akech and Emily Ratajkowski, it is fair to say she succeeded.

The collection also undergoes the task of conveying the diverse representations of masculinity. Donatella explains, “What I wanted to show in this collection are the different faces of a man, who … has gained the courage that he didn’t have before. If I had to find a word that defines today’s men, it would be daring.” Throughout the Fall collection, Versace demonstrates these different faces of manhood by combining pieces that exude both a sense of femininity and masculinity, creating an overall androgynous feeling for the collection.

Overall, the collection, although heavily inspired by ‘90s style, felt extremely now and trend-focused. Bringing together sex, a little bit of bondage and brightly coloured print upon print, the collection encompassed the best of everything totally Versace.
