Joan Smalls rocked the fierce first look at Marc Jacobs’ SS15 RTW show — a stiffly structured forest teal dress, puckered at the waist with an ‘80s style, silver buckled belt. It was all very “G.I. Jane at the disco,” as if flamboyance had had a leading role in the aesthetic of vintage East Asian war uniforms. There were Mandarin collars, pantsuits, army-derived color schemes, and fabulous, ubiquitous oversized cargo pockets.
We’ve seen some candy-like embellishments trending in this NYFW season’s collections, but at Marc Jacobs, the “candy” took a turn for the candid — we saw larger, more serious, button-like spherical embellishments, reminiscent of army-style, oversized silver nob buttons, but in various colors, sizes, patterns, and arrangements.
As aforementioned, there was a slight Vietnam-era, night-at-the-disco feel, which really caught on toward the last of the show’s looks with Twiggy style mini dress and silken minis with peep-hole cutouts at the hips.
The disco fever spread amongst the space-age, East Asia military-inspired womenswear, bringing a bit of levity to the industrial utility of the collection. As fun as the collection was, its presentation’s star-studded cast was no less attractive. Walking the runway were the likes of Candice Swanepoel, Kendall Jenner, Jamie Bochert, Karlie Kloss, Hilary Rhoda, Gigi Hadid , Hanne Gaby Odiele, Anja Rubik, Edie Campbell, and Adriana Lima, to name only a few of the best of the industry’s best models who graced the catwalk in Marc Jacobs.
