An Ode to Heritage: Barbour x The William Morris Gallery collection

LIFESTYLE and heritage brand Barbour has released its latest collaboration collection, and this time it’s with the William Morris Gallery – a museum that’s dedicated to the influential arts and crafts designer, William Morris, and so, expect legacy in abundance.

It was only natural then, to turn to their archives for inspiration, and the Eye Bright and Wey Print prints, which date back to 1883 caught the eye of the design teams. Reissued in new hues especially for this collaborative line, these famous leafy and floral prints offer a modern take on classic artworks. The result? A six-piece capsule collection that includes outerwear, dresses and shirts line that epitomise two quintessentially British design favourites.

On the archive-inspired collection, Nicola Brown, Director of Womenswear at Barbour says, “William Morris is known all over the world for his incredibly detailed and instantly recognisable artworks. Here at Barbour, we are delighted to be working with The William Morris Gallery to blend these beautiful prints with clothing designs from our own archive. There is a timeless nature to this collection that comes from the long and celebrated history of both Barbour and William Morris, and I am looking forward to customers discovering this new range.”

Known and loved for its outerwear, Barbour presents a line available in classic olive and navy tones in both quilted and waxed variations. Neatly tailored, the traditional designs are lined with the William Morris prints for a flash of colour. The clothing is dramatic yet delicate, think all-over-prints and romantic ruffles.

It gets better as this project helps to support the exhibition, learning and conservation programme of the William Morris Gallery. On craft and the collection, Hadrian Garrard, Director, of William Morris Gallery says, “We’re very excited to embark on this new project with Barbour, a brand that epitomises quality and the significance of British craft, hand-making and design. This collaboration upholds many of the traditions built by William Morris that still endure to this day.”

It pays further homage to heritage and the natural world thanks to its campaign shoot that was shot in England’s oldest surviving topiary garden, Leven’s Hall in Kendal Cumbria by Hollie Fernando, and is influenced by William Morris’ ethos of ‘simplicity in nature.’
