Japanese fashion designer and founder of Commes de Garcons Rei Kawakubo brought guests of her mens catwalk show in Paris this month back in a time machine to the Victorian and Edwardian period. A noticeable theme throughout the garments were cut out shapes ravaged the materials where pockets usually are placed. Most of Rei’s pieces looked as though sabotaged by a pair of scissors, and reconstructed by placing bits of dissimilar colour or pattern to the piece. This appears to be a similar theme that Rei has demonstrated in her past collections.

One particularly interesting ensemble included a dark blue leopard suit with red tartan oversized lapels over a black solid dress shirt paired with black flats. The models had masks of black hair twisted and draped over the front of their face resulting in partially blocked vision.

There was no lack of pattern and variations of polka dots, stripes , animal print, and more darted the runway. The colour palette for this collection was grey, black, dark blue, creams with accents of red, green and purple. The range included knitwear, shorts, and frock jackets worn with casual sneakers bearing tattered shapes and cut-out effects. Comme de Garcon’s collection can expect to attract those who might prefer more “breathable” fashion.
