WITH summer in full swing, many are scouring every corner of the internet in search of their next holiday destination. Some travel to far-off countries, indulging in the hidden gems scattered across the globe. However, the most exciting escapes are sometimes much closer than one might expect.
Enter Relais de Chambord – a picturesque hotel housing 56 rooms located in the beautiful Loire Valley. The hotel itself is steeped in history. Located 50 metres away from the UNESCO site Chateau Chambord, the hotel was originally designed as King Francis I’s stable. Now, the hotel is an ideal destination for those keen to understand more about the chateau and its surrounding 13,500 acres of verdant forest.

As the 2nd most visited castle after Chateau de Versailles, history lovers might like to know that King Francis I initially had the chateau designed as a hunting lodge; therefore, he spent very little time here. In fact, only 90 days of the King’s 32-year reign were spent in the castle’s walls. Despite his short stay at Chateau Chambord, the King certainly took care with the castle’s architectural design.
From the Chateau’s central double-helix stairway to sky-high ceilings, intricate wall carvings, and an impressive 282 fireplaces, the castle certainly leaves no stone unturned. Stepping into the chateau feels like stepping into a fairytale world, so it makes total sense that this castle inspired the story of The Beauty and the Beast.
Whereas the chateau taps into a French Renaissance aesthetic, the Relais de Chambord opts for a more intimate vibe. Having been renovated in 2018 by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the hotel intertwines contemporary flair with classic Chambord minutiae. Window frames have been painted red, modern artworks adorn various walls, and luxurious furnishings add to the hotel’s cosy atmosphere.

The mornings here are as peaceful as they get. One can gently wake up listening to the distant chimes of the Chateau bells, the melodic sing-song of European Goldfinches, and the soft drumming of horses trotting on cobbled pavement.
Food-wise, one can start the day with the hotel’s buffet breakfast, featuring crunchy croissants, homemade granola, fresh fruit, and a la carte options. For lunch and dinner, Le Grand Saint-Michel restaurant offers a casual fine-dining experience where the cuisine is as French as it gets. The art of gastronomy comes to life through rich flavours, local ingredients, and culinary traditions.
Alternatively, if one wants something a bit lighter, the hotel’s second restaurant, Les Armes du Chateau, offers classic comforts such as croque monsieur, crêpes, charcuterie boards, and fresh salads.

In terms of food offerings outside the hotel’s grounds, a venture into Bauzy, a nearby village, is essential. Nestled away in the village’s outskirts lies Le Col Vert – a local restaurant offering traditional bites to eat, such as snail croquilles, deviled eggs, and tarte tatin.
The hotel’s surrounding landscape has much to offer. With nearly 3000 châteaux in the Loire Valley, one will never run out of cultural escapades. Fortunately, Relais de Chambord provides excellent activities to make the most of the region. If the weather is favourable and one is feeling adventurous, a hot air balloon ride above the French countryside is a fantastic option.
However, if heights aren’t your thing, vintage car tours can be arranged. Even if you’re not a major car enthusiast, these vehicles are sure to impress. Taking in the lush landscape while driving around in a classic Cadillac or Peugeot may be the ultimate way to travel in style.
Finally, to wind down and relax, the hotel’s spa has some rejuvenating offerings. Think: tailor-made facial treatments, indulgent massages, and invigorating scrubs. Equipped with a steam room, a sauna, a relaxation room, and an outdoor jacuzzi, a visit to this intimate spa is an excellent way to detox any stress and tension.
