Modern day geishas took to the catwalk, in a display that portrayed a western version of oriental tradition. Using Appliqué flowers and patchwork to form a 3D base, Marras’s embellishments added depth to floral design. Orange fabric blossoms and beading contrasted against Japanese print to add texture and pattern to the eastern theme. Obis tied at the waist remained true to culture, however the use of plastic instead of silk added an updated twist.
The introduction of a colourful palette that juxtaposed against gothic shades towards the latter half of the collection, was a mix and contrast of east meet west. A bolder colour clash against darker tones was a symbol of the modern takeover of traditionalism. In keeping with the Oriental theme, structurally the dresses were reminiscent of kimonos; loose fabrics held together with belts to add a feminine quality. Other garments featured three-quarter length sleeves combined with midi lengths, to create a boxy look that emphasised the physique.
Pattern on pattern, Marras chose to contrast polka dots against horizontal lines, whilst florals repelled against each other, leading to an exquisite meeting point that married the designs together. His use of artistic mediums to portray an intrinsically oriental theme was a reflection of both Eastern and Western culture. Presenting vivid colours transported from Asia, Marras’s show enchanted the audience and gave us a glimpse into a foreign escape.
