AS temperatures drop, skies become greyer, and practicality begins to drive all style choices, I find it depressingly difficult to bring personality to my winter wardrobe. Lately, however, winter accessories have ventured into a bolder territory, and on the AW18 runway, Balenciaga and their bright turtlenecks, Prada and their neon neoprene, and Richard Quinn and his iconic prints have inspired a new way to accessorise.
On the hunt for a lower priced alternative, I spent weeks searching the web for a neon pink scarf – but failed miserably. So naturally, when I saw Henry Holland posting on Instagram his latest collaboration with Selfridges, a customise your own scarf pop-up shop, I was overjoyed! Offering bright prints, bold colours, and daring design, The House of Holland scarf pop-up in Selfridges allows you to build your own bright winter accessory, reimagining the classic football scarf to bring a tongue-in-cheek, attention-commanding and personalised twist.

Stationed on the third floor, I made my way up the escalator to be welcomed by a giant scarf monster. Cocooned by walls of knitted scarves, the scarf “monster”, at seven-feet high, held in its hands the screen allowing you to design and bring your dream scarf to life. This fun and interactive approach kept a smile on my face for the entirety of the process. When the sales assistant Emily warned me that I may be there for hours, she wasn’t wrong. With six different prints to choose from, every colour you could dream of and the opportunity to write your own message, it was hard to decide what not to pick! Eventually, with the help of the lovely Emily, I decided on pale pink with orange tiger stripes, and with my name written in a warm yellow with a neon pink outline.
Once you have finalised your design, you input your contact details, including the address you wish the scarf to be sent (it takes seven-10 days to arrive), and then confirm payment. Whether it’s for you or for a loved one, these scarves unlock the answer to your uninspiring winter wardrobe. Wear yours with a full black outfit, or be bold and clash it with a bright print, either way, you’re bringing a pop of colour – in your own measure – to the colder months. Plus, if you, like me, designed yours with your name on then it’s more than likely you are the proud owner of a scarf that no one else in the world has.
