NYFW AW20: Oscar De La Renta

THE SETTING of New York Public Library for Oscar de la Renta’s Autumn/Winter 2020 fashion show demanded grandeur. And grandeur it got. The AW collection, co-designed by Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, truly had it all – bold colour-blocking, shimmer, flower embroidery, and lots of red lip. Very Oscar de la Renta.

As Paul Dukas’ classical symphony fills the space, de la Renta sends in its key player, Bella Hadid, in a saturated baby blue trench perfectly contrasted with the red turtleneck, shoes, and lips. What follows is a dash of de la Renta’s daywear looks, all colour-blocked in a similar fashion to Hadid’s outfit. Red, together with hot pink, definitely take the centre-stage in the first segment of the show.

As Oscar de la Renta is most celebrated for its evening-wear, the collection focuses precisely on that, with “party” being the main theme of the evening. Fun and flirty, the new AW2020 collection brings de la Renta’s best designs to the table, from voluminous skirts and rich colours to exquisite embroideries of flowers, with some looks at times resembling a Renaissance painting. Most evening and cocktail dresses of the collection are presented in a beautiful draped finish often with a puffed sleeve, keeping it in with the flower theme.

This season, Oscar de la Renta made sure that its models were quite literally gleaming during its New York fashion show. The metallic plissé gowns and sequin pantsuits that de la Renta showcased were truly the ultimate party inspirations.

The highlight of the show was undoubtedly Bella Hadid’s closing look. The grand finish in form of a crinoline dress echoed the show’s opening looks, while the flirtiness and playfulness of the feathery hot pink cape on top served as the fundamental essence of the AW20 collection of Oscar de la Renta.
