Joseph Altuzarra’s SS16 offering saw the designer tone things down furthermore, concentrating more specifically on lax elegance in yet another step away from his more glitzy salad years. This season also saw the designer retracing his Spanish roots, which resulted in delightful touches like high-heeled espadrilles and a whole lot more appealing textile triumphs.
Womanly, confident shapes were still in heavy demand at Altuzarra studio and subtle deconstructed fastenings that extended from disorderly décolletages and high slits on luxe skirts made it clear that while the brand is refining itself, sexy is always appropriate. Colour-wise this was upheld by hot tones of terracotta, tan embossed-crocodile leather and breathable linen whites that had an instantly refreshing sensuality to them.
A number of bags found themselves securely in a higher luxury league than one would expect from the likes of a relatively young designer native to New York, instead evoking the likes of brands such as Gucci. In another bravura-moment, a simply slick figure-hugging trench in more embossed-crocodile leather was more than worthy of fashion’s most influential names.
Beyond this, Altuzurra’s passion for dresses dominated the rest of the collection and further cemented this as his most successful signature, certainly seeing as his latest designs are just as fresh as ever. The growth was undeniable this season and it’s not hard to envisage Altuzarra continuing to take an even larger chunk out of NYFW in the future.
