Patchwork leather, flared pants, wing collars, and mauve, teal, and retro brown call straightforward and direct attention to the 1970s, the era in which womenswear shamelessly and nonchalantly fell straight and free of form from the thin hips of one of style’s halcyon decades. Playing on other generations bygone, Derek Lam also employed the sailor-style buttoning of 1950s trousers, and the 1990s (by way of the 70s, surely!) shapeless mid-calf duster.
The catwalk show ended with a bit of peplum and platforms, and the designer himself modestly outfitted in Levi’s and brogues. Though artful in its own right, the impressive wearability and feminine utility of Mr. Lam’s Spring/Summer ’15 collection is what most attracts us to his designs and eponymous line as a whole.
