Glass enjoys Ochre – newly opened at the National Gallery

RECENTLY opened at the National Gallery – one of the most recognisable landmarks in London – Ochre has made its mark as a restaurant which simply cannot be missed.

Charlotte and Sam Miller, the duo responsible for the Muriel’s Kitchen brand, has expanded into the London’s National Gallery transforming what previously was a museum cafe into vibrant and elegant restaurant.

Warm dim lighting, vintage chairs and crisp white table cloths create an intimate and exclusive atmosphere making the restaurant an ideal spot for dinner, date or a late night drink.

Ochre Interior

Ochre’s menu is comprised of the best seasonal ingredients, taking the inspiration from international and European cooking. The restaurant focuses heavily on traceability and sustainability – making sure only the best quality of products is served to the guests.

The majority of the menu is a selection of sharing dishes – a great way to explore the wide range of plates without committing solely to just one starter or a main.

Me and my guest have opted for a Burrata, which came with grilled courgettes, broad beans and hint of lemon giving it an extra punch of freshness, Soused Cornish Mackerel and Sea Lettuce Tacos were an explosion of flavours having a perfect mixture of crunch of the taco shell and softness of the mackerel.

The mains have not left us disappointed either. The biggest surprise was the humble sounding chargrilled cauliflower, which we have ordered quite dismissively. The seemingly boring vegetable has quickly became a dish which we could not stop talking about. The perfect balance between the smoky tones intertwined with delicate texture of the dish and we simply couldn’t get enough. Pan fried monkfish with charred hispi cabbage, romesco sauce and toasted almonds similarly is a must try.

Ochre Cocktail

Ochre’s bar also deserves a mention, lead by the Head Bartender Ian Williams. All cocktails have been created specifically for the restaurant, taking the inspiration from famous works at the National Gallery such as Sunflowers Sour, a blend of Del Maguey Vida mezcal infused with turmeric, apricot liqueur, lime juice, agave syrup and egg white – inspired by Vincent Van Gough’s famous Sunflowers. Also amazing alternative to a dessert for those who don’t find themselves having a sweet tooth during hot summer days.
