Glass escapes to Avoriaz to enjoy the beauty of the Alps

COCOONED within majestic mountains of snow, sitting beneath the chilly clouds shared between France and Switzerland, and built into the heart of the Portes du Soleil, the Avoriaz ski resort is a magical thing to experience. Something that was confirmed even before our arrival – as soon as we mentioned Avoriaz to any ski lover, they rewarded us with a satisfying nod of respect, a golden star in the ski resort qualifier.

How any ski enthusiast could deny that a resort with four green pistes, 25 blue pistes, 14 red pistes, and six blacks, which combine to reach more than 600km, is not impressive is beyond me. The sheer size alone kept us entertained during our three days there, in which we played mountain leapfrog between France and Switzerland, travelling through forests into wide blankets of white snow, sometimes relatively untouched if you were lucky with your timing.

Whilst visiting, we spoke to guests who came simply for the scenery and to enjoy the accompanying accommodation – in which you can enjoy an apartment or chalet with a private balcony overlooking the resort. We stayed at the Amara residences, which also gave us access to the spa, the outdoor jacuzzi, and the indoor heated swimming pool, which featured pool return jets powerful enough to massage out calf splints from a day on the slopes.

Avoriaz is proud to be vehicle free, which means all apartment buildings allow you to ski in and out, without ever having to carry your skis. Horse-drawn taxis, however, are an option for those that prefer to not drag their suitcases through the snow.

With a horse stable on-site, Avoriaz also offers the chance to enjoy a ski-joëring experience, where you can discover the resort pulled to the rhythm of horses. Galloping through the slopes whilst guiding your horse with French commandments (the only language they understand supposedly) was the most I laughed during our trip, so if you fancy the thrill of the speed but the comfort of the carriage, this is the ticket.

If that’s not exactly your idea of fun, then visit in the month of March to enjoy the Snowboxx festival that takes place at the resort. Stages are dotted around the apres-ski bars, where world- class acts encourage you to switch your skis for a G&T.

Avoriaz is an architectural marvel, wonderfully catered within the little town it has built, and a resort that accommodates skiers of all abilities, even those who prefer to not ski at all.
