Entitled Daytime Disco, the AW16 Sibling collection was all about fun and clubbing. In the ‘80s. Taking inspiration from the decade’s heroine, singer and style icon, Grace Jones, the designers, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery, introduced variations on Jones’s style and ‘80s silhouettes.
The show started calmly with a knitted wrap dress in the style of Diane von Furstenberg paired with a broad-shouldered jacket and safety pins as brooches. But as the show went on, the clothes got crazier in leopard print, sparkly lurex and peeking out nipples covered with star patches.
Even though the colour palette of royal blue, lilac and sunshine yellow and patterns were almost cartoonish, the silhouettes and shapes were boosting with sex appeal. The deep V neckline was central to the collection and so were figure-hugging transparent knitted overalls, maxi dresses with high slits and little sweaters worn with baggy jeans or high waisted midi wrap skirts tied with scarfs instead of belts. The leopard print or glittery silver lurex scarfs were also belting jacquard coats with brush stroke pattern.
The pieces resembling Jones’s style the most though were super short knitted lace hooded playsuits, making the models resemble boxing champions. While a relaxed oversized thick jumper and dress with a city sky-line were probably the least.
What made the clothes even funkier though, were the accessories. Each look was finished off with patterned socks and either loafers with contrasting tassels or heeled strap sandals. Knitted headphones with curled wire framing the model‘s face, where glossy berry lips stood out (Grace Jones-style), and lurex knitted helmets were among the more extravagant accessories, while big pomp om earrings and voluminous fringed collar scarfs were among the more wearable pieces.
