Paul Mescal stars alongside Xiao Zhan for new Gucci campaign

COMMEMORATING the 70th anniversary of the classic Horsebit 1953 loafer, Gucci has just released a new campaign starring Paul Mescal and Xiao Zhan.

Considered a breakout star of BBC Three’s series centred around Sally Rooney’s Normal People, Mescal is consistently praised for his acting performances.

Having recently starred in Aftersun and the soon-to-be-released Foe, the Irish actor continues to be a favourite amongst cinephiles.

Seen posing confidently in the iconic loafers, the actor embraces the timeless allure of the revolutionary footwear. At first, the Gucci Horsebit 1953 loafer was introduced thanks to Guccio Gucci’s adoration of equine motifs. Consequently, the double ring connected by a bar has now become an emblematic symbol of the House.

Despite having passed away in 1953, Gucci’s sons – Aldo, Rodolfo and Vasco – wanted to make the loafers in order to pay homage to their late father. Combining heritage, craftsmanship and comfort, the shoes continue to be a huge success for the House to this day.

In addition to Paul Mescal, Xiao Zhan sports the classic loafers. Having risen to fame for his performance in the Chinese drama The Untamed in 2019, Zhan’s popularity has been on a steep incline.

As a global brand ambassador, the actor embodies the contemporary aesthetic of the House. Intertwining the American outdoor lifestyle with British equestrian silhouettes, it’s clear that the loafers act as a perfect demonstration of Italian design excellence and elegance.
