NYFW AW20: Proenza Schouler

‘THIS SONG is dedicated to all jealous people.” These were the first words that came from the speaker of the Proenza Schouler fashion show in New York. And indeed, their new AW20 collection definitely made every member of the audience and beyond jealous.

This evening, Proenza Schouler brought their A-game to the lobby of Frank Gehry’s ICA building in New York. This AW20 collection featured everything the dynamic duo behind the brand, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, are known for – impeccable leather craftsmanship, high fashion with a dash of contemporary, dark toned deconstructed looks with an occasional splash of red.

It was an evening celebrating rectangular double-breasted blazers and trenches with an emphasised tailoring, done in the spirit of power dressing of the ’70s and ’80s, when suits with shoulder pads first became a thing. Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber and Doutzen Kroess were all seen rocking the power look, each complemented by modernistic, simple yet elegant necklace and a handbag, – such precise attention to detail with a sense of simplicity and sophistication in every look is indeed Proenza Schouler’s forte.

Proenza Schouler’s show also became an ode to bare shoulders, which were exposed in almost every look of the collection. Popping out of almost every dress, deconstructed top, and a jumper-coat combo, tonight, the bare shoulder finally makes its fashionable comeback.

Draping was yet another focal point of the evening. Trapeze walking between high-fashion couture and street-/sportswear, Proenza Schouler showcased pieces wrapped around the body, varying from stretchy dresses to asymmetrical oversized coats, layered beautifully atop straight knee-length skirts.

While supermodels graced the catwalk, the audience was no less filled with famous fashion enthusiasts. Model Emily Ratajkowski and star of Insecure Issa Rae all made a special appearance, making the Proenza Schouler AW fashion show even more star-studded.
