Givenchy’s 2019 pre-collection

CLARE Waight Keller has taken things to higher spheres since she took over the torch from Riccardo Tisci as artistic director for Givenchy and this time she owns up to that statement quite literally as her fall 2019 pre-collection is inspired by the legendary story of Icarus, who crafted wings out of wax and flew too close to the sun resulting in him tragically tumbling to his death.

The French maison’s 2019 pre-collection follows three narratives, informed by the sea and the skies and represented by a different Greek deity. Shades of blue and wave prints are inspired by the God of the sea, Poseidon. Selena, sister of sun God Helios representing the moon, can be found in the deep shades of yellow and grey and touches of velvet, silk and lurex. The two-toned monochromatic trench coat is an obvious reference to the horizon. Rhiannon, symbol for the sun, is represented in a black colour palette, livened by red and nudes giving a face to the Givenchy red. The gradations of colour mimic the sun, as the use of pearls and crystal resemble the glistening of the sun.

Referencing the spring-summer collection, key-items – the bolero trench – from the former collection make an autumnal comeback in a range of different materials.

Aside from the classics – the pin stripe, red suiting and tailored blazers – Icarus makes an appearance in the menswear collection as a part of the three-tier collection narrative. Starting with the water represented in blue shades, transitioning into yellow, symbol for the sun and lastly including the story of Icarus and the Minotaur, with red and black. Don’t be confused by the military and aviator influences found in the collection, as these are modern incarnation of Icarus.

Finishing the collection informed by myths and mystery Givenchy launches new handbag named Mystic. The name doesn’t stand representative of the blue X-men character yet took inspiration from its own design as the lock is hidden.
