RICCARDO Tisci’s visionary prowess cements Burberry AW19 advertising campaign as one of the brand’s most memorable. By recruiting both Danko Steiner and Nick Knight to photograph the latest collection, the Chief Creative Officer proves he is dedicated to capturing the essence of British culture.
“I have been thinking a lot about England as a country of contrasts, from the structured to the rebellious and free, and I wanted to celebrate how these elements coexist,” said Riccardo Tisci.

Champions of the lens in their own rights, Steiner and Knight naturally interpret the multifaceted theme of the AW19 campaign quite differently. On the surface, this distinct contradiction may seem slightly odd, but the juxtaposition is by no means accidental. To hire two, seasoned yet stylistically unique, photographers is the most effective way to demonstrate importance of self expression and individualism, which is crucial to the mission of Burberry’s AW19 campaign.

“It was Riccardo who had the brilliant idea to shoot the collection by the sea. The result is that these classic silhouettes of his Burberry ladies and gentlemen end up being framed by water. The concept of water came directly from the theme of Burberry’s Tempest show,” said Danko Steiner.

For his vision of the campaign, Danko Steiner photographs stoic models (among the likes of which are Gigi Hadid and Irina Shayk) wading ankle deep along the British seaside. Sporting Burberry’s staple beige creme coloured palettes, exquisitely tailored blazers, track tops, quilts, silk shirts with shell buttons and pleated skirts, each individual brings to life a look that is both contemporary and classic. The ocean and mirrors act as the perfect backdrop to clarify the breadth of the theme. Much like the clothes, the sea acts as a uniting force, evolving through time.

By contrast, Nick Knight brings an edgier modern twist to his part of the Burberry shoot. In his mission to explore the vast meaning of the British culture and how fashion transcends different groups of people, Knight goes all in by breaking the fourth wall of photography. Handing his models video cameras, Knight gives them the autonomy for change. Just as Steiner utilizes the sea and refined outerwear to showcase the ever-changing aspect of British culture, Knight clarifies a resilient rebelliousness through darker, sharper shapes.

“We wanted to break the idea of models posing and looking perfect and show a more real and unmanipulated vision,” said Knight.

In the end, the AW19 campaign proves once and for all that more is more: why settle for just one photographer, when you can have two?
