Glass reviews Nanogen Hair Thickening Treatments

IT’S BEEN several years now since I first began to suspect that my fine hair was thinning. For a long time, I kept my suspicions to myself. I didn’t want to admit it was happening, and, if no-one else had noticed, why draw attention to it? Finally, I confided in my favourite and famously blunt-speaking hairdresser. He confirmed that my hair was indeed thinning along the parting.

He also reminded me that I had never, ever obeyed his advice to improve my diet in order to strengthen my hair, and that this might still help. But he also pointed out that if the follicles were simply producing fewer strands (which often happens as you age), topical treatments were the most likely to help – and only a few of those actually worked.

I had an irrational fear of topical treatments. I felt that once I tried these, I was committed to fixing my hair loss – and I have a problem with commitment. I was also afraid that I’d get my hopes up, and then find them dashed. And, (although I knew this was irrational in the extreme), what if a topical treatment made things worse? So I stumbled on mixing a bit of denial with a little depression, and experimenting with various shampoos and vitamin supplements.

Gradually, I was able to confide in family and friends that my hair was thinning, and that it was making me feel awful. And happily, the more outspoken I became about my hair loss, the less I cared. I began to feel curious about it, rather than upset and secretive. I developed an eagle-eye for spotting women like me who suffered from a high scalp to hair ratio. And I also noticed that society’s idea of what a head of women’s hair should be has changed – it has become commonplace to augment with extensions. I’ve always loved the ‘60s fashion for Dynell falls, false fringes and wigs, but I think that was a psychologically healthier trend – no-one was under any illusion that all those beehives and waist-length ponytails were natural.

I kept my hair long enough to pull into a top-knot, changed my shampoo to an organic one that my hair seemed to love, and which didn’t lead to so much fall-out in the shower. I had – I thought – made my peace with thinning hair.
Than Glass asked me to review Nanogen hair thickening treatments. The day to try a topical treatment had dawned … I began the recommended one month regime by swapping my favoured organic shampoo and conditioner for the Nanogen Thickening Treatment Shampoo and Thickening Treatment Conditioner.

I had been trying to increase the length of time I could go without washing my hair, so I was initially quite disconsolate to find that I had to wash at least every two days when first using these products. However, my hair adjusted quite quickly and I used these two products to the exclusion of all other shampoos and conditioners for the first eight weeks of my Nanogen trial.

Every night I applied the recommended 10ml of Nanogen Hair Growth Factor Treatment Serum directly to my scalp. I concentrated the contents of the pipette on my particular problem area, which is close to the crown of my head, and then massaged the serum in to the scalp with my fingertips.

Nanogen recommend at least one month’s use of their products to see any results, and warn that it can take longer to see an effect. I am so relieved that I noticed change on Day 29. Had it taken a little longer for the regime to have a visible impact, I would have written off this range at the end of the 30-day trial – and missed out on something that has actually stimulated hairgrowth and made a real and visible difference to the thickness of my hair.

When I first realised that the overhead light in the bathroom was not bouncing off my exposed scalp with the usual dazzling and depressing intensity, I immediately sought a professional opinion. My hairdresser confirmed that lots of baby hair was coming through, and that the condition of my hair had improved remarkably since the last time he’d seen me. Encouraged, I bought a follow-up bottle of Nanogen Hair Growth Factor Treatment Serum and continued the nightly 10ml applications.

I’ve now been through four bottles of Nanogen Hair Growth Factor Treatment Serum – it should have been five, but I’m still not great at remembering to apply it every night. It is making a difference to my hair – slowly but surely, the thin patch is improving, and the baby hair springing up elsewhere is very encouraging. I’m keeping my hair much shorter now – no more topknots and ponytails which disguise the thin patches but strain the hair – and am avoiding dye and limiting heat styling.

Nanogen also sent two styling products to try: Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray and Nanogen Keratin Thickening Hair Fibres. I’m not a talented stylist, and usually simply towel-dry my hair, shape it with my fingers and hope for the best. As my hair is very straight and fine, it will usually fall into something approximating a bob with very little direction from me.

The Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray certainly gives lift and body – I think it would work brilliantly for anyone whose style of choice lies on the bouffant or pompadour axis, but, purely because I prefer my hair worn low and sleek, initially I struggled a little with this. You spray it onto dry or damp hair and style as desired – blow-drying increases the effect as the heat activates more hair-thickening proteins. I’ve now found that using Root Boost and drying my hair upwards and away from my face gives me a fabulous quiff that distracts the eye from my thinning crown marvellously.

The Nanogen Keratin Thickening Hair Fibres come in a little plastic tub (easy to carry in your handbag). You shake the colour-matched keratin fibres into the areas where you wish to disguise thinness. These work very effectively; if you’re keen to disguise your thin areas, I heartily recommend them. The fibres add colour and density, and work through electrostatic charging. One end of the keratin fibre is charged negatively, the other positively, and so the fibres will bind perfectly, however they fall into the hair. To make the Keratin hair Thickening Fibres waterproof – so waterproof that you can even swim while wearing them – follow up with Nanogen Hair Fibre Locking Spray.

Once I began to open up about my hair loss, I quickly discovered that other women I know are suffering from it too. I realised that thinning hair is never as obvious to others as it is to yourself, which is worth trying to remember when you’re feeling very down about not having a lustrous mane. I also discovered that what works for one person won’t work for all – which is frustrating, when you’re desperate for a sure fix.

The Nanogen Hair Growth Factor Treatment Serum is working for me, I’m still using it and still seeing improvement. If my hair loss story resonates with you, then do give it a try, and remember not to be discouraged if you don’t notice results in the first month.
